EMS Student Plan for Remainder of 2019-2020 School Year
EMS Students and Parents,
We hope that this message finds you all well. Please know that the EMS family of teachers and staff miss all of the students dearly and that we are still here to assist all students with needs that may arise during these trying times. Below we are listing several topics to give you guidance as we move forward. We will push through this and we are here to serve the students of Etowah Middle School!
Academic Guidelines:
Final Grades:
All Non-Core Classes: All full year non-core classes’ grades will be taken by averaging the first, second, and third nine weeks grades and that average at the close of the third nine week grading period will be the final average for that student for each class. For semester classes the average for the third nine week grading period will be the final grade for that course.
Passing Core Classes: If a student was passing their core classes by averaging the first, second, and third nine weeks grades at the close of the third nine week grading period that will be the final average for that student for each class that they are passing.
Failing Core Classes: If a student was not passing their core class by averaging the first, second, and third nine weeks grades at the close of the third nine week grading period the student and parent will be notified by the school and will receive a packet from their teacher for each class that they are failing containing essential standards that the student did not pass. This work will need to be turned in to the school in a bin outside of the school by May 1st. A diligent effort must be given to get credit for the work. If the student completes the assignments they will receive a 60 for the course. If they do not complete the assignment they will fail the course and will have to complete the grade in which they are currently enrolled.
Assignments for the Remainder of the Year:
Core Classes: All core classes will be delivering work by blended method. This means that each core teacher will offer digital material via their Google classrooms and packets of work (Available on April 11th outside of EMS) for students without access to the digital platform. This work will consist of essential standards not yet covered by the teachers for the remainder of the year. This work will not be turned back in and will be considered supplemental material needed to complete to be ready for the next school year.
THESE ASSIGNMENTS ARE SUPPLEMENTAL AND WILL NOT IMPACT YOUR FINAL GRADE BUT ARE VITAL TO COMPLETING TO ENSURE THAT YOU ARE READY ACADEMICALLY TO MOVE ON TO THE NEXT GRADE. YOU WILL NOT TURN THE PACKETS BACK IN TO THE SCHOOLS BUT TEACHERS ARE AVAILABLE TO HELP YOU THROUGH MULTIPLE AVENUES.
Other Supplemental Resources: EMS has a large amount of supplemental resources that are available to students outside of the assignments mentioned above. These resources can be found on our website and on individual teacher websites and/or google classrooms. Parents can find these resources to keep their students active wile we are out of school.
Teacher Availability: Teachers are still available to assist students. Teachers are approaching their classes in different manners. All teachers will be available during specific times at least three days a week. These times will be posted on a chart on the EMS website. Teachers can be contacted during these times through scheduled chats on their google classrooms as well as responding to emails during these times as well. Teachers will be checking emails and responding to students daily. If you are having a difficult time contacting teachers please contact Mr. Johnson at jjohnson@attalla.k12.al.us.
ACCESS Classes (Career Prep A):
If a student is enrolled in Career Prep A, which is an online class, the student has 3 options:
1-The student can accept their grade as of March 15th as a final grade for the course and receive credit for the course.
2-The student may drop the course and receive an incomplete for the course.
3-The student may continue working on the course from home and all work must be completed by May 15th and their grade will be taken at that time.
-All students enrolled in this class will be contacted by Coach West or Mrs. Harbian to discuss options.
Other Topics of Concern:
Student Belongings:
We understand that many of you have personal belongings still at the school. We will schedule a time to enter the school to clean out lockers and get other specific belongings in the school when the state loosens the requirements of group gatherings and allows more leeway with social distancing. WE WILL NOT CLEAN OUT LOCKERS OR THROW ANYTHING AWAY UNTIL YOU HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET YOUR PERSONAL ITEMS.
Returning School Materials:
Under the same guidelines in recovering student belongings, we will designate a time to turn in textbooks, library books, and any other school owned material that you may have in your possession.
YOUR SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF THE EMS FACULTY AND STAFF ARE THE TOP PRIORITY FOR ANY DECISION MADE AND WE APPRECIATE YOUR PATIENCE AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, STAY SAFE! IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS PLEASE CONTACT MR. JOHNSON AT jjohnson@attalla.k12.al.us.
Thanks,
Jeff Johnson
